Luther College of Arts & Sciences Minors

Midland University offers these undergraduate academic minors through the Luther College of Arts & Sciences. These minors must be completed in conjunction with an undergraduate degree.

Art

Individuals pursuing an Art Minor will be exposed to various art media and techniques in which they will develop their own artistic voice and learn to integrate it into their major field of study. Students utilize, develop, and assess critical thinking skills, explore and refine the creative problem-solving methodology, and understand previous and current art culture. Pairs well with Arts Management, Digital Marketing, Psychology, and Education majors.

Communication Studies

In Communication Studies, there are many opportunities to make a difference in workplaces and impact communities through work in higher education and/or nonprofits. They demonstrate strong verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills and have considerable expertise in speaking well in front of small and large audiences. By applying contemporary theory and skills to our professional and personal lives, our students get hands-on experience working within the communication field. Pairs well with Human Services, Digital Marketing, and Arts Management majors.

Criminal Justice

The Midland Criminal Justice minor is designed to prepare students for professional careers in law enforcement and criminal justice. At Midland, we recognize the importance of applying a liberal arts education. With its holistic approach and emphasis on problem-solving and communication skills, students are prepared for entry-level positions in criminal justice agencies like probation and parole, corrections, juvenile diversion, and law enforcement.  Midland’s Criminal Justice program will give you the tools for continuing personal and professional growth to face new challenges and recognize and take advantage of new opportunities in your field of interest. Pairs well with Sociology, Psychology, and Business majors.

English

Midland University’s English minor provides students with an intellectual and practical ground in the study of literature and literary methodology and practice. We focus on writing (critical, professional, and creative), and the English language’s history and structure. With a curriculum designed to develop a wide variety of skills, Midland English students gain lifelong proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, computer use, and research. Pairs well with Arts Management, Communication Studies, History, Education, or Business majors.

Graphic Design

Appealing design is incredibly important when it comes to all forms of visual communication, advertising, marketing, and branding. Through coursework in the graphic arts minor, you’ll learn how to take your design ideas and execute them into successful print and digital pieces. The skills you’ll learn can be applied across a wide range of industries. Pair well with Arts Management, Digital Marketing, and Communication Studies majors.

History

In the Midland History minor, you will explore various political, social, and cultural frameworks that encompass the events of United States, European, and non-Western history. Students examine the nature of historical developments within core history courses while developing their own interests by selecting from several elective support courses. Pairs well with Communication Studies, English, and Business majors.

Mathematics

Math is a critical element in developing a wide variety of different fields, not only in physics, engineering, and computer science, but also in business, social sciences, medicine, biology, and many others. Many employers recognize that students with a strong math background (major or minor) generally have excellent problem-solving skills and hardworking characteristics. Pairs well with Psychology, Sociology, and Business majors.

Politics & Citizenship

The Politics and Citizenship minor explores the complex relationship between political activism and individual identity. By utilizing an interdisciplinary framework, the minor considers the legal, political, and historical issues that have shaped contemporary notions of citizenship. Students who pursue a Politics and Citizenship minor complete core political science and government courses and develop their own interests by selecting from a list of elective offerings. Pairs well with Criminal Justice, History, and Sociology majors.

Psychology

The field of psychology is exciting and diverse. Psychology at Midland University focuses on a scientific explanation of the underlying processes involved in human and animal behavior. Our program provides the foundational knowledge applicable to many career paths and the comprehensive background necessary for graduate study in psychology. Religion & Philosophy

Religion is an important human phenomenon. Our religion and philosophy department emphasizes the critical analysis of Christianity’s sacred texts and doctrines, reflection on the nature of religious belief and practice, and integrating faith into daily life. At Midland, we value our Lutheran heritage and welcome students of all faiths and students without religious backgrounds to participate in our theologically diverse course offerings. Sociology

Sociologists play a central role in our society, teaching us to appreciate diversity and human behavior. The sociology minor is for students who desire to better understand others, culture and/or research skills. Through sociology courses, you’ll develop the ability to look at an issue from different perspectives to solve a problem. Sociology provides valuable insight and analysis into the workings of society, the family, the legal system, and other institutions. Writing 

This interdisciplinary program is designed for students contemplating careers that emphasize writing and the teaching of writing, or students who wish to enhance their written communications skills, or those entertaining the study of law or business. Students seeking a Midland Writing Minor can participate in 12 credit hours in classes like Wordsmiths, Linguistics, Introduction to Creative Writing, Research and Writing, Digital Photography, Writing for Media, and Writing about Social Issues. Pairs well with English, Criminal Justice, and Business majors.

Youth & Family Ministry

Are you interested in serving the church? Do you enjoy working with people? Youth? Families? Elders? Earning a minor in Youth & Family Ministry from Midland University adds value to a wide range of vocations and further education opportunities. The Youth & Family Ministry program is interdisciplinary—with focused attention to religion, sociology, psychology, and communication—that emphasizes three sets of core skills and knowledge necessary for work in ministry. In addition to teaching skills and knowledge, our program firmly grounds students with real-world experience in various ministry settings. Pairs well with Human Services, Psychology, and Sociology majors.
