President Horner letter to Midland seniors

Mar 25th , 2020

Dear Midland University Seniors,

Greetings from all of us here in Fremont. I miss seeing you and your fellow classmates on campus and send heartfelt prayers for your safety and health during this difficult time. I write today to share two important messages with you.

First, I want you to know that I recognize COVID-19 has robbed you of so many milestones and “lasts” as graduating seniors. It pains me to think about what you are missing, and I wish so badly things had turned out differently. Your sense of loss is real and I share in it as our campus misses your contributions during the last two months of this academic year. That said, I know that as Warriors you understand the importance of doing what must be done to practice social distancing and flatten the curve.

Second, we find ourselves in a situation where, for everyone’s safety, we have had to make the responsible choice for the spring 2020 commencement. Commencement will look different this year but one thing remains certain, we WILL celebrate your accomplishments and wish you well on your post-graduation journey. We are still working on the details of how we will make this moment special and meaningful for you and we will be sharing that information with you in the next few days.

We acknowledge this is not what you, or any of us, had in mind to commemorate your final semester at Midland. I truly regret this and wish we were “back to normal.” However, there is nothing normal about our current circumstances and we must take extraordinary action to do our part to slow the spread of this virus. These decisions have not been made lightly and we are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and all of their families while making the most of this unfortunate situation.

As you continue this semester online, please know I am thinking of you and cheering you on. I look forward to the day when I can personally shake your hand and say, “Congratulations, graduate!” Thank you for your patience and your perseverance. Together, we will learn and grow from this experience and go on to live out Midland’s mission to be “in the world with purpose.”

Warm Regards,

Jody Horner
