Jane Hiatt | Faces of Midland: Employee Edition

04/29/22

From Tutor to Teacher |

As she spent time helping tutor fellow students while in nursing school, Jane Hiatt realized she wanted to find a way to help students on a larger scale.

For the past eight years, Jane has been a key member of the Midland nursing program. Serving as an associate professor in the School of Nursing, Jane has helped numerous students reach their goal of entering the nursing field. She specializes in pediatric care and works with seniors during their preceptorships, which is a period of practical experience and training for students in the medical field. “I did some tutoring when I was in nursing school and realized I loved helping others learn. Helping students be successful is what I love the most about teaching.”

Not only is pediatrics her favorite subject to teach, but her love for babies is so strong that she has visions of being “a professional baby rocker” as her true calling. “I love little babies!”

As she works closely with students to prepare them for a career in nursing, Jane is appreciative of the close-knit relationships Midland has helped foster. “I love being able to get to know my students and really be able to access what they are learning. I appreciate the smaller campus and the support from my colleagues.”

She’s been a supportive resource for her students as well and wants them to understand that putting in the work, in and out of the classroom, will lead to positive outcomes. “You will get out of life what you put into it. I want my students to understand that one bad test score does not define who they are, and they shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions.”

In her time away from teaching, Jane enjoys reading, watching movies, and spending time with loved ones. “I wish I could say working out was something I enjoy doing, but that wouldn’t be very true!”

Getting to know Jane Hiatt:

Something people might not know about you: I would eat Mexican food (particularly nachos) every day if I could.

Snack that you can’t resist: Ice cream, especially Cold Stone Creamery’s chocolate with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups mixed in. YUMMY! I also love popcorn and Doritos.

When flipping channels, I’ll always stop to watch this: Almost any home improvement show, the Harry Potter movies, the movie The Proposal, and I just started the series Bridgerton and love it!

What artist dominates your playlist? Not sure I have a favorite artist, but I do really like country music. My favorite concert I went to recently was Blake Shelton.

What is your ideal vacation? A warm and sunny beach with clear blue water. I am going on a cruise in a couple of weeks, so that might become my favorite vacation.

What is your most-used emoji? It is probably a tie between the laughing emoji 🤣 and the heart 🧡 emoji. I do really enjoy using emojis!
