This program is designed to help teachers understand English as a Second Language learning strategies and build programs that best support English Language Learner (ELL) students in their classroom and their district.

Why Earn Your ESL Endorsment?

With an increase in the ELL population throughout the Midwest, many schools are choosing ESL endorsed teachers.  With this endorsement, a teacher can advance to positions within their district like ESL coordinator or ESL facilitator that often comes with advanced pay and responsibilities. 

Note: It is NOT a requirement that you speak or know another language to enroll in this program.


Program Details

Throughout the 12-month program, Midland ESL students will gain hands on experiences working in the classroom with diverse student populations in a variety of settings for immediate application from learning.

This endorsement is completed at the graduate level providing the student holds a valid teaching certificate.

  • Individuals with this endorsement may teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in the grade levels that they are prepared. This can be a PK-12, PK-6, 4-9, or 7-12 endorsement.

Program Outcomes:

The Midland ESL Endorsement will help you become an educator that promotes the success and well-being of every ELL by:

1.     Knowing, understanding, and using the major theories and research related to the structure and acquisition of language to help English Language Learners’ (ELLs) develop language and literacy and achieve in the content areas.

2.     Knowing, understanding, and using major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to the nature and role of culture and cultural groups to construct supportive learning environments for ELLs.

3.     Knowing, understanding, and using evidence-based practices and strategies related to planning, implementing, and managing standards-based ESL and content instruction.

4.     Demonstrating understanding of issues and concepts of assessment and use standards-based procedures with ELLs.

5.     Utilizing research and policy and understand current issues to improve curriculum, instruction and assessment of the ELL.

6.     Working collaboratively with school staff and the community to improve the learning environment, provide support, and advocate for ELLs and their families


Course Details

The hybrid model provides the opportunity for students to meet in person two times during each 8-week course with the remainder of coursework online.

Throughout the 12-month program, students will complete the following courses and field hours*.

* Field hours can be completed within the student's current building or district providing there is an ELL student population.

Complete Your Application

The first step in the admissions process is to fill out the free application

Submit Your Resumé

Applicants should submit a 1-page résumé highlighting their employment and education background. The employment section should include locations, titles, and dates. The education section should include dates of attendance and degrees received.

Submit Your Cover Letter

Applicants should submit a cover letter to help us get to know you and understand why you are interested in Midland's ESL Endorsement.  It should address the topics below in no more than two pages.

1. Tell us why you are interested in earning an ESL Endorsement from Midland University.
2. Tell us how you plan to use an ESL Endorsement.

Submit your Enrollment Deposit

Your $250 deposit secures your seat in the program, triggers your enrollment in your first courses, and is non-refundable.
