Outside Scholarships

Outside Scholarships

Outside scholarships (scholarships not awarded by Midland University) could provide you additional resources to help fund your education. Midland students are awarded a total of $500,000 in outside scholarships each year! Applying for outside scholarships can take some extra time and effort, but the process can be very rewarding. When you apply for outside scholarships, you are utilizing opportunities that reward you for your academic, athletic, extra-curricular, and community achievements.

How to Apply for Outside Scholarships

Step 1: Search for Outside Scholarships

When looking for outside scholarships, you should start by contacting your high school guidance counselor. Your counselor can help guide you through the process and provide you with resources to help you get the most out of your scholarship search. Your prospective college’s financial aid office may also have information about available scholarships.

Your hometown’s local businesses, clubs, organizations, community foundations, and churches may also award scholarships. Many of these organizations have scholarship opportunities for high school students.

Another great place to start your scholarship search is the internet, but be sure to apply for scholarships through credible online sources. Also, be cautious of outside scholarship sources that may require an application fee.

For information on how to avoid scholarship and financial aid scams, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website.

Step 2: Apply for Outside Scholarships

Once you have identified the scholarships you are interested in applying for, and you have verified that you meet the qualifications of those scholarships, it’s time to apply! Many applications ask for additional documents such as your high school transcript and resume, so having those documents ahead of time will help make the application process easier.

Complete your scholarship application in its entirety and have someone proofread your scholarship essay before you submit it. Remember to have fun in your scholarship search and apply for as many scholarships as possible.

Step 3: Report Your Outside Scholarships to the Office of Financial Aid

You’ve been awarded an outside scholarship – congratulations! Your next step is to notify the Office of Financial Aid that you have been selected to receive an outside scholarship.

Depending on how the outside scholarship funds will be received, there are a few ways to notify Midland about your scholarship award.

  • If you have already received a scholarship check, you can mail it to us, or stop by the Office of Financial Aid, so it can be applied to your account. Please mail your scholarship award letters and checks to the following address:
    • Midland University
      Office of Financial Aid
      900 N. Clarkson St.
      Fremont, NE 68025
  • If your scholarship funds will not arrive before payment is due, please provide us a letter from the scholarship organization stating the amount they will be sending and how the scholarship should be split. If this is not specified in the letter provided, and the scholarship $1,000 or less, the scholarship will be applied fully toward the fall semester. If it is greater than $1,000 and the split is not designated, the scholarship will be split between the fall and spring semesters.
Step 4: Receive Your Aid Adjustment

When you report the outside scholarships that you have been awarded, we will review your award to determine whether the funds can be added on top of your award, or if an adjustment to your need-based award is required by federal regulations. Midland’s policy is to always reduce the need-based loans first. This adjustment may result in an increase in the non-need based loan up to the original loan amount total. Either way, you win!

Once your adjustment has been made, you will be notified and your revised financial aid package will be available in WarriorCentral.
