Midland University students and faculty recently welcomed in the community by hosting a parental training seminar in the Midland Event Center. The event, sponsored by Dodge County Head Start, UCLA/ Johnson & Johnson and the Office of Head Start Health Care Institute, offered healthcare and educational suggestions to local parents.

“This event shows the great opportunity Midland students have to put the values of respect and stewardship into action,” said Diana Moxness, Midland University Assistant Professor of Nursing. “It was wonderful to see so many volunteers rise to the occasion and impact the community is such a positive way.”

Overall, approximately 40 Midland University student volunteers combined with Dodge County Head Start to teach parents in a series of seminars, including courses on what to do when a child is sick and how to navigate and interpret educational material. Midland juniors Natasha Andersen and Carly Schmit put nursing practice to work by serving as major presenters throughout the program.

Additionally, Midland University education students and Blue Key members provided childcare activities during the event.

The community health-promotion program was put on after Dodge County Head Start was awarded one of just 50 grants nationwide. The seminars were offered to approximately 100 parents in the local area and were presented free of charge.
