Brooke Phillips | Faces of Midland Employee Edition

02/17/23

A Warrior at Heart |

After Brooke Phillips was inspired by one of her Midland University professors to pursue a career in higher education, she knew exactly where she wanted that career to unfold.

For the past four years, in two different roles, Brooke has carried out that goal of working in higher education at Midland. She currently serves as the Admissions Office Manager.

“Nick Schreck (Director of Undergraduate Business/Assistant Professor of Digital Marketing) inspired me to pursue a career in higher education. I knew I wanted to work at Midland, so when a position opened up in the Financial Aid Department, I applied right away. After a great visit with Doug Watson (Director of Financial Aid and Express Services), I knew that I could see myself working at Midland.”

Although she has since transitioned to a new role within the Admissions team, Brooke said her time in Financial Aid was a great experience and prepared her for future opportunities. “I enjoyed helping incoming and current students understand the aid that helps them further their education. I will always value the time spent, and knowledge received, from the Financial Aid Department.”

Through her time in Financial Aid, and currently with Admissions, Brooke values the time she gets to spend with students and helping them form their own college journeys. “My favorite part of working with students is watching them get excited about what they are learning on their career paths. Their excitement is contagious, and I can’t wait to see where that path leads them.”

As she works with those students, Brooke emphasizes the importance of being responsible and being in charge of your own situation. “I encourage students to be their own advocate, and rely on yourself by holding yourself accountable. If you come up with your own solutions for whatever life throws at you, nothing can stop you from pursuing your goals.”

Brooke’s time away from Midland is spent with a friend of the four-legged variety, her two-year-old golden retriever, Cricket. “I enjoy spending time with her. She has kind of become my whole world.”

Getting to know Brooke Phillips:

Something people might not know about you: I have a minor in Political Science.

If I weren’t working in higher education, I would be . . . Probably pursuing a job in marketing.

Snack that you can’t resist: Chicken in a Biskit crackers. Hands down!

When flipping channels, I’ll always stop to watch this: I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I love watching sports. March Madness is my favorite time of the year!

What artist dominates your playlist? Zach Bryan, for sure! I was a fan well before “Something in the Orange” came out.

What is your ideal vacation? Anywhere within walking distance of the ocean. I have always believed that I was born in the wrong state because of my love for the ocean.

What is your most used emoji? The facepalm 🤦‍♀️. I have a lot of facepalm moments! It is my midwestern equivalent to the word “ope.”
