The Value of a Mentor |

As she works to mentor students on their college journey, Kristina Cammarano is grateful she had someone who helped guide her when she was a college student at the University of Pacific in Stockton, California.

“I was very involved as a student and got connected to a great mentor, my school’s Dean of Students. She helped me explore the field through internships and also supported me through the graduate school search process.”

Nearing her one-year anniversary as the Vice President of Student Affairs & Chief Diversity Officer at Midland, Kristina strives each day to be a role model, mentor, and resource for students. “Getting to work directly with students and collaborating with my team is what I enjoy most about being at Midland. Students are the core of the institution, and I value the opportunity to work alongside them to create experiences and support systems that help them achieve their goals.”

With nearly 1,200 undergraduate students on Midland’s campus, Kristina is aware of the many different backgrounds, beliefs, and goals that exist within campus. “Each student is different, and I appreciate the tenacity and creativity they bring to conversations about making Midland a better place. That also carries forward into conversation on how they can be supported in their growth to lead with purpose in the communities they will call home after their time here.”

Kristina’s role allows her to be a sounding board for students. When she has the opportunity to be a part of the conversation, she urges students to be part of a supportive community. “I would encourage students to give themselves, and others, grace. Create time to make connections beyond the initial thing that brought you to Midland, and know that there are so many caring people here that want to see them succeed, so don’t hesitate to ask for help.”
