Midland University Theatre

A note from Dan P. Hays, Director of Theatre

"What I want to provide is a very fulfilling experience. I want all of my students to find success in the performing arts; to feel comfortable on stage, to connect to an audience, to overcome inhibitions and discover the freedom in acting/singing/dancing."

Hays brings enthusiasm and years of impressive experience to Midland's theatre department, and wants to utilize his skills to give students a memorable, personal experience. Click to view Dan's staff bio.

Theatre Ensembles/Shows

Midland University's theatre department produces high-quality plays, musicals, and one-acts in which students can participate in a variety of ways. Students can audition for performance roles, apply for technical staff, or play in the show's orchestra. In any given year, our theatre department will bring at least three plays and three musicals to the stage. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in an annual One-Acts festival as either a director, performer, or technical staff. We pledge to get every interested student on stage in a role. Our theatre and technical theatre staff believe in education and experiences that genuinely prepare students for the real world of performing arts. Each production features a mix of aspiring professional actors and actresses, as well as students from across campus that simply want to perform because they love it.

Short Attention Span - Improvisational Group

Short Attention Span, Midland University's very own improvisational group, performs in similar fashion to ABC's hilarious show, Who's Line is it Anyway? SAS makes audiences laugh at a variety of special events on and off campus.

The Spotlight Series

The Spotlight Series originated in the Spring of 2016, where Midland students were given the opportunity to completely create, produce, direct, cast, and perform an original show. Students apply for a producer role for one of the year's two shows when they arrive in August. Selected students are then given the complete freedom to create the show with the advisement of our theatre director.  The first two installments, "That's Entertainment!" and "A Tribute to the Decades" were held at the Fremont Opera House and were catered by Granite City. Each past performance of The Spotlight Series has completely sold out.

Theatre Classes and Workshops

Midland University offers a broad scope of classes in acting, technical training, directing, and other theatre activities. Special workshops throughout the year, including workshops with arts professionals, are also available to students.

Alpha Psi Omega

Alpha Psi Omega is Midland's national honorary theatre society. Members of the society are given special opportunities, including producing "Thoroughly Modern Miller" to be performed by Midland students in April 2018.

Individual Theatrical Opportunities

We encourage students to explore all aspects of the theatre including directing, playwriting, scene work, technical advancements, costuming, hair and make-up, stage directing, set design, sound, lights, and more. With the help of excellent theatre and technical theatre directors on staff, students are given the opportunity to personalize their experience by working closely with one another. Students are routinely given freedoms to be creative and imaginative in every aspect of the program. If you have an idea, we'll help you make it happen.
