Lucas Weyrich | Faces of Midland

Keep Hustling

As an international student, you could say Lucas Weyrich has faced more unique obstacles than most of his American friends. While it has been tough for him to adjust to cultural differences, it hasn’t been tough for Lucas to excel as a Midland student.

“I have been raised as German as one could be, probably, which is a big part of who I am, and what I value. I think that I have been able to acquire a lot of positive things throughout my life thanks to that. The influences that people I’ve encountered have had on shaping me to this day and keep on shaping me throughout my future life.”

Not only is he enrolled in the Honors Program, but he is also a member of Psi Chi, a supplemental instructor for PSY120, and a psychology tutor in the Academic Resource Center. All while maintaining a 4.0 GPA in three of his four semesters so far at Midland.

When we asked Lucas what three people he could have dinner with, dead or alive, he didn’t respond with famous athletes, musicians, or actors like most people we asked. Instead he responded with neuroendocrinologist Robert M. Sapolsky and the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud.

So we weren’t surprised when we found out that Lucas works in the behavioral neuropharmacology lab at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln on the weekends. Working there not only allows him to conduct research that he is passionate about, but it also prepares him to pursue his doctorate in neuroscience after graduating from Midland.

In between classes, you can catch Lucas listening to Bietigheimication by Rin, learning about monkey and penguin research, and enjoying being more nerdy than people expect him to be.

If Lucas has taught us anything, it’s that you can achieve anything if you truly put your mind to it and work hard. Also, keep hustling at all times.

Lucas Weyrich is a junior Psychology major with minors in Applied Behavior Analysis and Sociology from Bad Urach, Germany. To share your story or nominate a friend, email social@midlandu.edu or post using #FacesofMidland.
