Midland University hosted its 2024 Fall Research & Critical Thinking Fair on November 22nd at the Wikert Event Center.
There were 40 different students representing Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, History, Communication Studies, Nursing, and the Howard Hanson Honors program.
For many students, these research projects serve as the capstone experience for their academic major, requiring them to apply skills they have developed throughout their time at Midland. For others, their projects involve putting academic knowledge into practice by going out into the community for enhanced experiences and reflection.
Students presented their findings to judges during the event, and awards were presented in two different categories.
First place in Inquiry & Evidence-based Research went to Ariyana Crafton-Jimmerson for her presentation Unpacking the Complex Influences of Age, Race, Socioeconomic Status, and Gender on Jury Decision-Making in Capital Cases: A Prosecutorial Analysis. Second place went to Aaron Langemeier for his presentation Agriculture to Innovation: Assessing Nebraska’s Economic Landscape.
In the Primary Data – Explanatory Research category, first place went to Jacki Apel for her presentation Rest or Risk: Why Sleep Matters for Your Daily Functioning. Second place was awarded to Cole Macaluso for his presentation Strengthening the Mind: Examining the Effects of Exercise on Mental Illness.
