Helping Others
His love for the Arts and his passion for helping others have both been nurtured during Mason Dahlke’s time at Midland University.
The variety and the “Arts for all” mentality brought the Columbus, Nebraska native to Midland, and he has thrived whether on-stage, helping with the production, or lending his talent as a singer.
“I love that I’ve been able to be involved in so many different aspects, whether that’s performing on stage, helping with the technical part of a show, or singing in choir. There aren’t many schools where you would be able to do that.”
The ability to wear so many different hats, while pursuing a Biology major, convinced Mason that Midland was right for him. The fact his mom, Jill (Paustian ’94), graduated from Midland, didn’t hurt either.
“I visited Midland, and with everything I was looking for, this was the right choice for me. I knew a place like UNL was too big, and I wanted smaller class sizes and to build relationships with professors that I knew I wouldn’t be able to at bigger schools. Plus, by the time you look at all the numbers and with my scholarship, you’re paying about the same as going to a bigger university.”
Along with his involvement in the Arts, Mason has been a part of Beta Sigma Psi fraternity and also spent two years as a supplemental instructor for general chemistry.
After graduating in May, he plans to pursue a career as a Physicians Assistant and has applied for PA programs at Creighton University, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Union College in Lincoln. “Hopefully, I will get accepted soon and will start a program in August of next year. I like the PA route because it’s easier to change specialties and it’s better suited for rural areas where they might not have as much access to a doctor.
He has honed his patient-care skills for the past two years as a Certified Nursing Assistant, working in Fremont and Columbus. “I’ve really enjoyed it, and it’s been a great college job because it’s given me the flexibility to pick up shifts when I can. I’ve always been a caring person, and I like to find a way to make sure everyone is supported.”
The support he has received during his time at Midland has made a lasting impact on Mason, one that he will carry with him far beyond his days on campus. “It’s been pivotal for me to be involved, and one thing that’s great about Midland is that you can truly do as much as you want. I’ve met amazing people through the shows I’ve been in over the years, or through the classes I’ve taken. I’ve built lifelong friendships.”
Mason Dahlke is a senior Biology major from Columbus, Nebraska.
