Smelker Handles Dual Responsibilities
Kayla Smelker is flat-out doing work. As both a soccer player and a nursing student, she finds herself very busy. Did we mention she is the all-time goals leader at Midland?
Kayla wanted to come to a school that would allow her to pursue her professional and athletic dreams: becoming a nurse and playing collegiate soccer. “There weren’t many schools that would let me do both within 4 years and I simply fell in love with Midland’s atmosphere that the coaches created among the soccer team. It was already like my second home.”
Being a student-athlete isn’t easy by any means, but Kayla says that Midland makes it easy. “It’s been a very busy four years, but the professors have been really helpful in making my college journey a success by being flexible and understanding. With soccer, I had a team that would support each member. It was really like having 20 sisters, and frankly, who wouldn’t want that? We were always there for each other and we pushed each other to work harder each and every day.”
Kayla’s advice to prospective student-athletes: “Time flies by. Give it your all both on and off the field. Enjoy every moment and don’t sweat the small things, as they tend to take care of themselves. Lastly, live it up as you only get one chance.”
