Myana Sigers | Faces of Midland

04/15/25

An Athlete and So Much More |

Midland University provided Myana Sigers the opportunity to continue her flag football career, as well as giving her bragging rights over her brother.

“I liked flag football in high school, and I was pretty good, but my brother would always tease me that flag football didn’t mean anything and I should focus on being the brains of the family. Then I got a scholarship to Midland to play football, and my brother had to apologize. I’ve really learned to love flag football at Midland.”

The opportunity to play in college wasn’t something the Miramar, Florida, native was planning for. “I was just going to college for academics. During my junior year of high school, we got a new coach who had a lot of connections in the flag football world. He started reaching out to colleges, and I started getting offers.”

Flag football was still in its early stages three years ago, and most of Myana’s offers came from schools in the Midwest. On her tour of Midland, things began to click. “There was just something about Midland that felt right. I liked the campus, the smaller classes, and the tight-knit community. It was a lot different from Florida, but different isn’t bad.”

The opportunity to be more than just a student-athlete appealed to Myana, who had an ambition to be a performer as well. “I liked the aspect of not just being an athlete, and I wanted to continue pursuing my passion of singing and acting. In high school, I remember my theater director being upset if I had to miss something for football practice. At Midland, I was able to be passionate about both things.”

Myana has been able to wear many hats at one time at Midland. Along with football and the Arts, Myana has served as president of the Black Student Union for the past two years. On top of all that, she is graduating this May after just three years. “I was very involved in high school, so coming here and getting involved was an easy transition. I feel like living a life of being stressed is normal to me. If I don’t have something to do, that’s when I don’t feel normal.”

More school lies ahead for Myana as she is planning on attending law school sometime in the near future. “I’ve always wanted to go to law school and could see myself working as a criminal law prosecutor or a Constitutional lawyer. “I have a passion to help minorities who have had their rights infringed on, and I want to make sure there is equity in America. Law is such a broad field and can open doors to other opportunities, maybe even politics.”

Myana views herself as someone who has grown in so many ways from when she arrived at Midland three years ago, and is grateful for the path Midland has taken her down. “When I got here as a freshman, I remember sitting in my room crying because I was thousands of miles away from home, and I didn’t think I would make any friends. I’m so much more independent now, and I have memories and outlooks on life I wouldn’t have had if I didn’t come to Midland. I’ve met so many people from all over the world, and it’s amazing what can happen when you’re willing to take yourself out of your comfort zone.”

Myana Sigers is a senior Sociology and Criminal Justice major from Miramar, Florida.
