Midland Wins 2013 GPAC Men’s Soccer Tournament Championship

Nov 16th , 2013

Hastings, Neb. - No. 25 Midland University upset No.5 Hastings College 1-0 on Thursday night to earn the title of GPAC Postseason Tournament Conference Champions and clinch a spot in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament.

"I love this team," said Sean Fraser, Midland University head men’s soccer coach. "What a quality effort by the lads tonight. We played hard for all 90 minutes and earned the victory." The Warriors and the Broncos both played a solid first half as neither team gave up any ground. They would go into the half at a tie, 0-0. Midland was outshot in the first half, only getting off five shots compared to the Broncos’ 11. Midway through the 2nd half Ali Sodal found the back of the net off the corner kick from Tom Sibbald to give the Warriors the 1-0 lead with just 23 minutes to play in the game.

Midland’s defense shut the Broncos down and, as the final whistle blew, the Warriors were crowned the 2013-14 GPAC Tournament Champions. Midland took advantage of their chances on the night, with the deciding goal coming off one of two shots in the second half. The scoreless victory marks Midland's 14th shutout of the season. Keeper Lewis Wilcox shut Hastings down through 90 minutes in-goal, while recording four saves.

With the win, the Warriors move to a program-best 18-1-2 on the season and earn their 8th victory in a row. Hastings College drops to 18-3. With the victory, Midland secures the GPAC's lone automatic berth to the NAIA National Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round on Saturday, November 23. The win marks Midland’s first GPAC Postseason Tournament Championship since the 2009 season.
