Midland softball competes to fight childhood cancer

When the Midland University softball team took the field for the weekend’s fall tournament, they were draped in gold uniforms. Don’t worry; the Warriors haven’t permanently ditched the orange and blue. They sported gold on Sunday because, well, they wanted you to ask.

The Warrior uniforms were purchased and worn in support of the recently developed “Sammy’s Superheroes” organization, a group that raises awareness to fight childhood cancer. Created in 2012 in Columbus, Neb., the non-profit cause started as an effort to shed light on childhood cancer and to fund research aimed at finding a cure for the disease.

With the organization encouraging Nebraska to “Go Gold” in September, Sammy’s Superheroes came in the form of the Warrior softball team through the suggestion of two student-athletes. Twin sisters and teammates Kayla and Lindsey Ritzdorf, natives of the nonprofit group’s hometown in Columbus, Neb., brought up the idea of wearing the shirts for Midland’s home tournament after being inspired by them in their local community.

“We first heard about the cause in our hometown and thought it was great right away,” said Kayla Ritzdorf. “The team was excited to be a part of such a good cause.”

Head coach Keith Kramme and the team embraced the chance to “Go Gold” and bring attention to the devastating disease, purchasing and wearing the gold shirts for Midland’s Fall Round Robin Tournament. The Warriors fielded two teams at the event with 15 players on each roster. All in all, Midland played eight games on the day.

“I think having a whole team support something like this really opens peoples’ eyes to the issue,” said Lindsey Ritzdorf.  “It brings attention to it and makes people ask questions. I think it’s great.”

All costs of Midland’s gold uniforms will go to the Sammy’s Superheroes organization. Additionally, the Warriors are donating $200 from tournament gate proceeds to support the nonprofit group.
