Fourteen members of the Midland University bowling teams have been named National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA) Academic All-Americans. All in all, the Warriors had five men and nine women named to the list. Among those earning the high academic honor were Billy Lowther III (Fremont, Neb.), Jordan Plunkett (Everett, Wash.), Austin Porter (Blue Grass, Iowa), Justin Reininger (Leigh, Neb.), and Ryan Novak (Burnsville, Minn.) on the men’s squad. For the women Makenzie Cherne (Federal Way, Wash.), Courtney Couch (Puyallup, Wash.), Sabrena Divis (Gillette Wyo.), Kaitlyn Johnson (Plattsmouth, Neb.), Ashley Meyer (Orchard, Neb.), Sarah Muench (Kewaskum, Wis.), Katie Olson (Fremont, Neb.), Kjerstin Richards (Renton, Wash.), and Hannah Weeks (Urbandale, Iowa).

“It takes a truly special individual to maintain this type of success in the classroom,” said J.J. Mastny, Midland University bowling head coach. “ To achieve this award at this level, a student-athlete must be deeply dedicated and character-driven.”

In order to be nominated to receive NCBCA Academic All-American status, athletes must hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 at spring eligibility check. Student-athletes must also be a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) collegiate participant.

In addition to Midland University’s achievements in the classroom, the Warrior men are ranked No. 4 and the women are ranked No. 5 in the latest national poll. The men have won four all-out tournament championships this season with the women claiming three. Last season, both squads reached the all-encompassing USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships with the men outlasting a handful of national bowling powers, including Toledo and Notre Dame. The women finished as the National Runners-up, ahead of Florida State University, Wichita State and a field of the most renowned teams in the country.

The Warrior bowling teams will compete at the USBC Sectional Qualifier in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday, March 8. For more information on the Midland bowling teams, please visit
