Kate McCown | Faces of Midland: Employee Edition

Capital Ideas

Not only would Kate McCown ace a quiz about United States capitals, she’d be able to give first-hand knowledge on most of them. McCown, Director of Academic Core Experience at Midland, has visited 37 of the 50 capitol buildings. “I have a goal I want to get to all 50. If you’re from out of state, it’s likely I have visited your home state capital!”

Kate has visited many parts of the country, but for the past 3½ years, she has been a fixture at Midland University. Among her many tasks are working in Academic Affairs and sharing all of those resources (Academic Resource Center, Library, MID courses) with students. She also supports the DRIVE (Digital Fluency, Research & Critical Thinking, Innovation, Vocation & Leadership, Engagement & Expression) Framework and teaches MID 101, MID 103, and MID 104 classes.

Kate says her passion for helping students emerged when she was a student herself. “I had an awesome undergraduate experience and was very involved on campus, so I decided to make a career out of working with college students.”

The great teamwork that exists between faculty, staff, and students is what makes being part of Midland so unique for Kate. “I enjoy partnering with colleagues across campus to improve the support we offer our students. I also love connecting with student leaders and seeing them grow and develop over the years.”

When she’s not on campus helping Midland students thrive, you might find Kate around the house, maybe weeding the flower beds, working on home projects, or quilting. And if she hadn’t fallen in love with collegiate life, she might have wound up helping people decide their financial futures. “I would love to help ‘average’ folks learn how to leverage their money.”

Rather than sharing financial advice, Kate can share a little wisdom with Midland students when it comes to navigating a four-year path through college. “Take advantage of all the major and career exploration tools Midland has to offer. College is the best time to think about what you want your future to look like and get the experiences you need to make it happen.”
