Luther Library FAQ’s

What is my Student ID number?

You can find your Student ID number in the FreshX app. This number is used to scan and check out the materials at the Library.

When is the library open?

Standard hours during the academic year are:

  • Monday-Thursday: 7:45am – 11:00 pm
  • Friday: 7:45am – 4:30pm
  • Sunday: 3:00pm – 11:00pm
Can I access the databases off campus?

Yes! Click on the database that you wish to search from and a login screen will appear. Use your Midland credentials (same as Canvas) for your username and password. Once you log in, you will have full access to all of Luther Library’s databases.

How do I get full text articles in the databases?

When you are searching in a database, the first thing you should do is limit your searches to the full text. If you don’t do this, there will be articles that appear that won’t have the complete article. To limit your search to full text, look on the left-hand side of your screen and you will find two small arrows: By clicking this, it will expand your limiters. The first limiter listed is the full text. Once you check that box, your search will update to only full-text articles.

What if there is an article that I want that isn’t full text?

If there is an article that you would like that isn’t full text, you can request an Interlibrary Loan. To do this, you can use the Interlibrary Loan Request Google Form found under the Services tab on the Luther Library website.

Where can I find out more information about how to create citations?

The Formatting and Style Guide on the Purdue Owl is a great resource to assist you with in-text citations and works cited/bibliography page. This resource provides information on MLA and APA citations: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.html

What is Closed Reserve and can I check out materials from it?

Closed Reserve is located behind the Help Desk. It contains shelves of textbooks and articles from professors that are used in some classes. Students are able to check out these materials, but they are to stay in the Library and can only be checked out for 3 hours.

How long can I check out the books on the shelves?

These books can be checked out for up to 3 weeks.

Can I renew my checkouts?

You may renew books as long as they are not being held for another patron.

How long can I check out DVDs?

You may check out DVDs for 7 days.

What is the cost for printing?

Both black and white and color printing is free of charge.

Are there quiet spaces in the Library for me to study?

Yes! The front of the Library generally has more noise and socializing, but towards the back of the Library is labeled as the Quiet Area. There are individual study rooms, study carrels, and furniture in this area to have a quiet place to study.

Can I still return my books if the Library is closed?

Yes! There is a book drop outside the Library next to the front door.

Can I reserve a study room?

Yes! On the doors of the study rooms in the Library, there is a QR code that you can scan using the camera on your phone. This QR code will take you to the scheduling website that is used to reserve rooms. You will have to log in using your Midland credentials and then you will be able to reserve the room at the time you need.

If I’m looking for a specific journal to search from, is that possible?
