Midland University celebrates Homecoming and Family Weekend

Midland University will celebrate Homecoming and Family Weekend, beginning Thursday, Sept. 14, and running through Sunday, Sept. 17, with reunions, celebratory banquets, and traditions such as coronation, Warrior football, and homecoming worship.

The classes of 1967, 1992 and 2007 will gather to celebrate milestone reunions throughout the weekend, including the Golden Warrior Reunion Brunch on Saturday. There, the honored class of 1967 will officially join the 50-year club. Past Golden Warriors and retired Midland faculty and staff also are invited. 

Coronation will kick off events Thursday. Midland’s Homecoming King and Queen and their court will be announced at a special on-campus pep rally at 11 a.m. 

That evening, Midland will bestow the Midland Distinguished Family Award to the Dr. Keith and Beryl Knudson Family and honor members of the Victory Society at the special dinner. The Victory Society is made up on those who have given a perpetual and/or a planned gift for Midland University. Dr. Knudson, professor emeritus of English, served at Midland from 1962 until his retirement in 1994.

Midland will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly renovated dining hall at 9 a.m. Friday. A “Be a Warrior” admissions open house, Student Warrior Day, and 7:30 p.m. Leuninghoener Planetarium show also are scheduled, as is the annual Midland University Awards Reception and Ceremony at 5 p.m. The celebration will include a reception for the 1987 Warrior Football Team, Midland’s 2017 Warrior Hall of Fame Inductee. The celebration will also honor this year’s distinguished alumni, Jeffrey Max Scherer (Class of 1987) with the Midland Alumni Achievement Award and Dr. Sharlay Butler (Class of 2010) with the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. 

A special “coffee welcome” for parents and families of current students at the Wikert Event Center will start the day on Saturday. At 11 a.m., all Warrior fans, including the honored class of 1992, are invited to join in the fun at the Warrior football tailgate, sponsored by First State Bank. This event is open to alumni, parents/families, and community. Family friendly activities will begin at noon, with face painting, inflatables, and other activities for younger Warrior fans inside the stadium.   

The Warrior football team will kick off against Briar Cliff University at 1 p.m. on Heedum Field. At 3 p.m., the Warrior Volleyball team will play Dakota Wesleyan University. Volleyball fans are invited to a tailgate prior to the game outside the Wikert Event Center.

At 5 and 7:30 p.m., respectively, the Warrior women’s and men’s soccer teams will host the McPherson College Bulldogs at Heedum Field.

Saturday evening will feature a football alumni reunion at 4 p.m. and a Homecoming After-Party Celebration for the Class of 2007 and other Young Alumni at 7:00 p.m. 

To finish up the weekend, Midland will honor its Lutheran heritage at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with a traditional church service, featuring the Midland Choir at Sinai Lutheran Church.
